The poultry sub-sector has grown significantly over the last few decades. It is the largest sub-sector in the domestic livestock sector. Broiler (poultry meat) and eggs are important sources of protein in Malaysia. Supported by such solid demand base, the country is highly self-sufficient in poultry as consumption is mostly supported local by production. Malaysia has become a net exporter for poultry products with Singapore as the major captive market. Without significant public interventions, the broiler industry has so far done well under intensive private investment. The poultry sub-sector is of economic significance to Malaysia.
